Cannes Diary (2002)
RottenPop Revisits the Works of David Lynch
In 2002, David Lynch, serving as thePresident of the Jury at the 55th Cannes Film Festival, seized the opportunity to document his entire experience. Called Cannes Diary and stretching across ten short episodes, Lynch offers an intimate glimpse into his world as he explores Cannes, France, with friends like Mary Sweeney and Angelo Badalamenti. We watch during the preparations for and duration of the world-renowned film festival.
It’s fascinating to see the city humming and crashing along as celebrities from all over the world make cameo appearances. It’s truly a unique look at a festival many only read about, all set to an easy, jazzy trumpet soundtrack provided by Lynch himself.
There isn’t much to report here. It’s almost like Lynch is allowing us into his personal life, showing us a family movie. He films clips in between obligated appearances, offering footage and shots of Lynch and his crew giving speeches, getting photographed, and generally schmoozing. It’s quite interesting.
Personally filmed on his own Sony DSR-PD150, a really versatile little camcorder, Lynch presents episodes covering topics such as Setting Up the Festival, Foix Grois, Photography, The Beach, Tearing Down the Festival, and more. These are followed by a series of fan questions. One of my favorite segments was in the Coffee episode (and yes, there is a coffee episode!), featuring Lynch sitting down with longtime friend and composer, Angelo Badalamenti. A small prologue before this episode begins references his character in Mulholland Drive, though this time he finds the espresso adequate.
Originally, this was released as a feature on his website, DavidLynch.com. It hadn’t ever been released on home video. However, the series is now archived online by fans and still lives on Archive.org. To this day, it continues to serve as an interesting look into the inner-workings of one of the world's most prestigious film festivals.
